Ask two installers which balustrade you should have and you will often get two confident, opposite answers. The truth is that frameless and post-supported systems solve slightly different problems, and the right choice usually comes down to your substrate, your budget and how exposed the site is. Here is how we talk it through with customers before anything gets quoted.
A frameless balustrade holds toughened laminated glass in a continuous channel, either bolted to the face of a concrete slab or set into a slot in the floor, with no visible uprights. The glass itself is the structure, so it has to be thick enough to carry the load on its own, typically 17.5mm or 21.5mm laminated depending on the barrier loading and whether there is a handrail on top.
A post system uses stainless steel or powder coated aluminium uprights at roughly 1.0m to 1.2m centres, with infill glass, wire or bar between them. The posts carry the load, so the glass can be thinner and the fixings into your structure are far less demanding. Both can be perfectly compliant with Part K and BS 6180; neither is inherently safer than the other.
Frameless systems put a big bending moment into whatever they are bolted to. A 1.1m high barrier with a 0.74kN/m line load generates real leverage, and that has to go somewhere. On a concrete slab or a properly designed steel edge, fine. On a timber deck built off joists, or a brick parapet of unknown age, it often is not, and the honest answer is either a structural upgrade or a post system.
This matters a lot around Chesterfield and the Peak fringe. We see plenty of older stone terraces, converted mills and sloping gardens where a raised deck sits on posts rather than a slab. In those cases a post-supported balustrade fixed through the deck frame into the joists is not the compromise option, it is the correct engineering answer. Exposed hillside plots at Holymoorside, Baslow or up towards Buxton also carry higher wind loads, which pushes frameless glass thicker and the cost up with it.
As a rough guide for supply and fit in this region, post-supported glass tends to land somewhere around £300 to £500 per linear metre, and frameless more like £550 to £900 per metre, before any structural work, stair rakes or curved glass. Those are ranges, not quotes: fixing method, glass thickness, access and whether we need a spigot, channel or standoff system all move the number. Steps and returns cost more per metre than a long straight run.
On maintenance, frameless shows every mark on both faces and you will be cleaning it more often than you expect, particularly near trees or a busy road. Marine grade 316 stainless is worth specifying on exposed posts; 304 will tea stain outdoors over a few years. Base channels need their drainage kept clear or water sits in them through a Derbyshire winter and works away at the seals.
If the view is the whole point, the substrate is concrete or steel, and the budget has room in it, frameless is worth the money and looks genuinely better. If you are retrofitting to timber, working to a fixed budget, dealing with an exposed or coastal style wind position, or you simply do not want the cleaning regime, posts will serve you better and nobody will think it looks cheap if the metalwork is well made.
Whichever way you go, ask for the glass specification in writing, the fixing detail, and confirmation that the design meets the relevant barrier loading for your use. Any installer worth using will have that to hand rather than working it out after the deposit has cleared.
If it protects a change in level of 600mm or more externally, it needs to comply with Part K and Part A, and forms part of any wider building control application. Replacing an existing barrier like for like usually does not need an application, but the new barrier still has to meet current loading requirements.
Sometimes, but only where the deck frame has been designed or upgraded to resist the bending load, which often means additional noggins, steel plates or a beefed up outer joist. If nobody has checked that, treat a frameless quote for a timber deck with caution.
A straightforward straight run of 6 to 10 metres is typically a one to two day fit once the glass has arrived, though toughened laminated glass is made to order and commonly runs three to five weeks lead time. Structural remedial work, stairs or curved panels extend both ends of that.
