How Much Does a Bespoke Staircase Cost in 2026?

A made-to-measure staircase is one of the most striking changes you can make to a home, but the pricing can feel like a closed book. Here is an honest breakdown of what a bespoke staircase actually costs in the UK, what pushes the figure up or down, and how to plan your budget with confidence.

Realistic price ranges

There is no single answer, but most bespoke staircases in our part of Derbyshire fall somewhere between 4,000 and 25,000 pounds plus VAT, fitted. A straightforward straight flight in steel with timber treads tends to sit at the lower end, while a curved or spiral feature stair with structural glass balustrade sits at the top.

As a rough guide, a metal and timber straight stair often lands around 5,000 to 9,000 pounds. Add a half landing or a quarter turn and you are typically into 8,000 to 14,000 pounds. A sweeping curved staircase or a cantilever design with frameless glass can run from 15,000 pounds upwards.

What actually drives the cost

The biggest factors are the shape of the stair, the materials, and the balustrade. A straight run is far simpler to fabricate and install than anything curved, and curves mean rolled steel and more workshop hours. Glass is the other big variable: toughened panels in a slotted channel cost less than frameless laminated glass fixed with standoffs or a stainless spigot system.

Finishes matter too. Powder coating in a standard RAL colour is good value, whereas hot zinc galvanising, brushed stainless steel or a hand-applied patina add cost. Oak treads, for example, cost noticeably more than painted MDF or softwood, and any feature lighting set into the strings will add to both materials and electrical work.

Costs people forget to budget for

The headline fabrication price is rarely the whole job. Building Regulations under Part K govern gap sizes, handrail heights and pitch, and meeting them properly is non-negotiable for a habitable home. If your staircase forms part of a loft conversion or a structural opening, you may also need a structural engineer and building control sign-off.

How to keep the budget sensible

If cost is tight, keep the geometry simple and spend your money where it shows. A clean straight steel stair with good oak treads often looks more expensive than a fussy design in cheaper materials. Choosing a slotted glass balustrade over individual standoff fixings, or a powder coat over stainless, can save a meaningful amount without hurting the finished look.

Always get a written, itemised quote rather than a single lump sum, and check whether installation, making good and VAT are included. A proper measured survey before fabrication is worth its weight, because remaking a staircase that does not fit the opening is the most expensive mistake of all.

Frequently asked

Common questions, plainly answered.

Why are bespoke staircases so much more than off-the-shelf ones?

Each one is designed, fabricated and fitted to your exact opening rather than mass produced to a standard size. You are paying for steelwork, skilled labour, a site survey and compliance with Building Regulations, none of which apply to a flat-pack kit.

Does a glass balustrade add a lot to the price?

It can, depending on the fixing method. Toughened glass slotted into a channel is relatively economical, whereas frameless laminated panels held on stainless standoffs or spigots cost considerably more in both glass and fittings.

How long does a bespoke staircase take from order to fitting?

Allow roughly six to ten weeks for most projects, covering survey, design approval, fabrication and installation. Curved or heavily glazed designs sit at the longer end, and lead times can stretch during busy periods.
